• UO Interviews: Gabriella Bechtel

We hit the beach in Malibu with Gabriella Bechtel, a model and student whose laid-back approach to style is one we’re envious of. Here, we chat with Gabi to find out more about her style inspiration, what pieces she can’t stop wearing, and where her favorite places to hang in sunny California are (even if she's not that into Cali).

Hi Gabi! Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I read somewhere that out of the twenty-five hardest questions in the world, this is the number one hardest to answer.

As a current student, can you tell us a little bit about what you're studying?
I'm not studying anything specific right now. I change my mind more than I should be allowed to so my future is a mystery to me. I’m happy as long as I'm around stimulating people, young or old, and keeping myself busy.

Even without a major in mind, is there a dream job you’d like to pursue?
If I could somehow be a dance teacher, stylist, personal grocery shopper, private investigator, singer, creative director, chef, DJ, mortician, photographer, actress, or food critic all in one I'd be happy.

What’s your favorite thing about living in California?
    Loving to hate it [smiles].

How would you describe your personal style?
I can’t even answer that for myself. I have a handful of movies that really inspire me so if I go to buy clothes and see something that reminds me of a film or a character in a film that I like, I normally buy it. I also love second hand and vintage clothing; it makes me feel special knowing that my items have some history behind them. That being said, my style is all over the place. I try not to think too much about what I wear because then I end up being uncomfortable.

    Which movies inspire you?
There are so many: Anywhere But Here, Gia, Stand By Me, The Dreamers, Thelma & Louise, Band of Outsiders, Little Voice, Flashdance, Endless Love... the list goes on!

What are some of your “must-haves” for California weather?
I don’t really dress appropriately for Cali weather but I see a lot of people in high waist cut-off shorts and crop tops so maybe I should invest in some of those.

    Favorite go-to outfit lately?
I have been wearing black or blue denim jeans and a black or white t-shirt with boots or flats for a really long time. I try to change it up once in a while.

Any favorite spots in town that you like to go when you feel like heading out?
Normally when I go out it’s to eat or go see a band play or something. I really love being in the comfort of a home, with friends or alone. Any place with good food where you can smoke is an A+ for me.

What about beaches and pools? Are there any specific ones that you love?
My neighbor travels a lot and when she’s gone I like to go over and take a swim in her pool. It's saltwater! I really only go to the beach during the winter because I get to wear a sweater, the reason as to why I’m so pale.

What has been the best part of your 2015 so far? The hardest?
Wow [laughs]. 2015 has for sure been one for the books. I've met some some pretty amazing people and feel like I've changed and experienced more this year than I have any year before. I think with change comes some fear and doubt so those have been the two hardest things.

Tell us five things you’re super into currently:
This blog called “sixpenceee” that has information on murder cases and paranormal sightings and everything along those lines, the band Slow Hollows, my friend Nick Santana and his dad's Instagram, burning CDs for my car that doesn't have an aux cord, and cooking eggs in different ways [winks].

Three foods you can’t get enough of: Brie cheese, ramen, and brussel sprouts with parmesan.

One thing you’re looking forward to: Getting asked out on a date.
