• UO Denim: Tamia Johnson

Denim forever. In the spirit of the timeless, forever favorite fabric, we're highlighting how some inspiring individuals from all over the world style their own unique spins on our BDG denim. See all our BDG stories here.

Dream team — emerging photographer Frankie Hildebrand (@frankiehildebrand) shadowed the beautiful, smart Pittsburgh-based Tamia Johnson (@skumbagg_) to see how she wears her UO denim.

Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit more about who you are + what you do?
My name is Tamia Johnson, an effervescent black artist. I'm a painter-lady and a feminist who uses my paintings & my social media as a way to empower women to be comfortable and confident within themselves. I also work to inspire unity within the female/African American community. I'm just a happy black girl in the projects tryna do my thing & shine.

    Pittsburgh, PA for the summer

    17 years old

    Astrological sign?
I'm a crybaby Cancer and a fierce Leo, which sounds dumb but I was born on the Cusp of Oscillation which basically means I was born while the sun was transitioning from one zodiac sign to the next and i got caught in between so i get to be both because those are the rules *hair flip*

Tell us one thing you’ve been extremely interested in lately (book, artist, TV show, etc.)
Lately I've been binge watching Girlfriends from the early 2000s.

    Who's your fashion icon?
I don't have a specific person that I could say inspires me, except maybe Solange. I'm inspired by the principles of color and geometry, the public, my culture, gender roles, etc.

Can you tell us the story about your favorite pair of jeans?
They're honestly just denim mom jeans from the thrift that are way too big and I wear them like everyday lol we're conjoined at the hip. literally.

    Light, medium, or dark wash?

What jeans did you wear in high school?
    baggy 90s mom jeans everyday

What are your favorite denim moments in pop culture or history?
TLC at the billboard awards in 92' and the general 70s era where blacks would wear afros and denim bell bottoms

If your jeans could talk, what would they say about you?
They would probably just be gasping for fresh air.

Where do you tend to find the best denim?
I literally only buy jeans from the thrift store.

If you’re an expert denim thrifter, any tips for finding the best jeans?
Size does not matter — I personally prefer baggy jeans with crop tops. When thrifting you have to be comfortable with wearing jeans that aren't in that modern skin-tight category. And you can never have too many pairs of mom jeans.

What current denim trend is your favorite?
The baggy low rise jeans and skimpy crop tops or the embroidered denim jeans and jackets. It's become such a DIY thing and people get sooo creative with their embroidery and patches and all. It's so cool to see what people create.

Would you rather be relegated to a life in bootcut jeans or a life in carpenter jeans?
Bootcut jeans because somehow carpenter jeans go in and out of style too often and I just feel like bootcut jeans somehow are always being worn. So I'd like to not spend seasons in the back of a closet.

If your significant other wanted to wear a denim suit with you a la Britney and Justin, would you do it?
Probably not, I wasn't too big a fan of that look and my significant other and I barely enjoy holding each other's hand LMAO let alone walk around in matching outfits. I wish I was that cool.
