• Tumblr Tuesday: Francisco Marin

We’re always scouring Tumblr for up-and-coming artists, photographers and interesting people to follow. On Tumblr Tuesdays we dig a little deeper, introducing you to a new person whose point-of-view we’re reblogging this week.

Meet Francisco Marin, a New York-based photographer whose photos are exciting snapshots of people and places that he encounters on a daily basis. See Francisco's work on the blog in our recent visit to artist Adam J. Kurtz's studio.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I'm a 26-year-old Texan living in New York City. I'm a fashion and lifestyle photographer! I like sleeping in late, classic horror films, and breakfast for dinner.

How did you get started in photography?

My high school physics teacher in 2005 gave me his old Polaroid Land camera and a few packs of film. Over the course of a few weeks, I shot my friends at parties, shot cheerleaders and football players, whoever I thought was interesting to talk to. I was shy before that and really liked having an excuse to go up to people to talk to them. They liked having their photo taken, so it was a win-win!

What subjects are you most drawn to?

I'm mostly drawn to people who are able to be vulnerable in front of the camera - getting emotion out of a scene is really important to me and it's the one thing I think is absolutely paramount to making an unforgettable portrait.

What's one tip you have for a photographer just starting out?

Soak up as much inspiration as you possibly can, from films, literature, photographers you love, illustrators, designers, Instagram/Tumblr/Pinterest, your old family photo albums, anything. Then, find out what it is about the things you're drawn to that makes them special to you, and keep that in mind as you continue to shoot.

Can you tell us a few of your favorite Tumblrs to follow?

Tamara Lichtenstein, who shoots dreamy, blissed-out analogue photography; Mack-Sam, a gritty, New York-inspired street fashion and lifestyle blog; Diner Porn has gorgeously photographed diner restaurants of America; Things Organized Neatly is photos of things… organized neatly; Menswear Dog; and Mr. DIV, a graphic designer who makes gorgeous, minimal, animated GIFs. Good eye candy.

What are five things you're really into at the moment?

    1. Candles! Lemongrass and verbena, cedar wood chips and leather, sage and thyme… I like having my home smelling 100% at all times.
    2. A now-defunct Swedish indie pop group called The Tough Alliance. My favorite jam: "Holiday."
    3.  The proliferation of American Horror Story: Coven-style witchy black hats that cute girls wear in autumn.
    4. Bourbon + warm apple cider. It tastes the way October feels.
    5. Notebooks. I've always been obsessed with collecting notebooks, though. I've kept a diary since the 7th grade. My sister recently sent me a really gorgeous brown leather Midori with thick, cream-colored pages and I love it.

One thing you're looking forward to this year.

I moved from a loud, lively part of Manhattan to a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood in Brooklyn a few weeks ago. The great thing is, most of my friends live within a half mile radius of me now. I'm hoping to spend more long nights on our rooftops and then falling asleep on each others' couches.
