• Dreamers + Doers: Providence Zine Workshop

This week we set up shop in Providence, RI, to meet up with some amazing local creatives at our second Dreamers + Doers gathering. D + D highlights emerging artists, entrepreneurs, and inspiring self-starters — for our Providence hang-out, we took over the long picnic tables at local bar The Salon and piled together a collection of pens, markers, pencils, paints, glue sticks, and a stack of vintage magazines to set up for a DIY zine workshop led by Rachel Fae Coleman, editor of the newly-launched Movable Magazine

Our group was made up of Providence College Marketplace winners Andrea Santos, Aliya Zafar, Suzie Shin, Bianca Jones, and Jennifer Berry (a select group of college artists and designers chosen to sell their pieces at a pop-up at UO Providence and online at UrbanOutfitters.com) along with a handful of local friends and collaborators. The night started off with amazing snacks from local favorite Julians (sopapillas with sweet and spicy sugar toppings!) before sitting down to a serious DIY session with Rachel, whose passion for editorial work, interviewing, and writing about the lives and work of other artists, creators, and makers prompted her to launch Movable this year. As we collaged, illustrated, painted and wrote, the group chatted about favorite zine genres, shared classes at RISD, and the constant evolution of the English language (how does the word “literally” no longer mean literally in the dictionary?!) Once the last zines were finished and the final sopapilla was eaten, we all agreed with D+D winner Bianca Jones - we “LITERALLY had so much fun.”
