• About a Face: Going Metallic with Natalia Calvani

Natalia’s bold eyebrows are what gained her a loyal cult following on Instagram, so we’re here to find out more about her makeup routine, metallic lips she loves, and (of course) those brows.

Hi Natalia! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? Where you’re from and what you do?
Totally! I'm based in Virginia at the moment, but I'm originally from Ponce, Puerto Rico. I'm very interested in art, especially sketching. I love to sketch. I'm also very athletic (I play Field Hockey and Lacrosse), and I'm a model! Aside from my job, I think I'm a very average teenage girl. I love binge-watching movies and shows on Netflix, I'm very into clothing and styling... and Harry Styles! Going back to modeling though, I just finalized my paperwork for my contract with NEXT Models. I'm very excited about becoming a part of their family. I can't wait to travel and work. I'm the type of person that's content when they're constantly doing something, haha.

While you’re still pretty young, you’ve done a bunch of cool campaigns recently. Can you tell us a little bit about what you see yourself doing as a career?
Now that I'm a signed model, I hope to gain more experience and be blessed with better opportunities. I know that this is going to open a lot of doors for me! It's insane to think that I was able to work with people like NARS and Mansur Gavriel and get interviewed by W Mag as a freelance model. I know that the modeling industry is very, very competitive, but I have faith that everything will work out. I've decided to continue modeling full-time after I graduate, so I'm putting everything on the line because I truly believe that I can make something of myself.

If I happen to be wrong and things don't work out, then I'll definitely be furthering my education in college. Whatever happens, I'll always be grateful for the things that I did get to achieve. I'm an optimistic person, and I'm glad to have such a great support system at home. I wouldn't have been able to do any of this if it wasn't for my amazing family. They've made everything so easy for me. I like to take things day by day, so I don't like to look too far in to the future, but it looks pretty bright.

What’s been your favorite campaign to date so far?
This is a really hard question, because each experience has been so different and amazing, but I'd have to say NARS. NARS was the first big brand to ever contact me, and working with them helped me out of my comfort zone. Unlike my typical photoshoots, most of this campaign was going to be on video. It was like I was acting, but without a script. I thought it'd be easy and I was like, "Oh, I'm just going to sit there and look pretty while I'm staring at the camera," but that was not the case! The entire team was extremely patient with me though, so it was awesome. They made me feel comfortable. It was a really nice environment to be working in. They also had these really good cookies on set which I still think about from time to time... I don't know when the final product is going to be released, but hopefully it's soon. I can't wait for everyone to see!

What’s your favorite thing about shooting with your sister, Bianca?
When Bianca and I are booked together it makes my job so much easier since we're sisters. We're available to each other at all times, and that's really convenient. We're very close, and we've learned a lot from each other and helped one another grow. Bianca's also not scared to give me constructive criticism. I've worked with her so much that now she directs me with single words, haha! For example, if I'm not posing correctly and she wants to make my jaw look more flattering she'll just say "chin." I immediately know what that means and adjust myself properly, so it makes the process quicker. Bianca's very serious about her business though, so when we work together I go in to the shoot like I would any other. I also like that she lets me have a creative voice regarding concepts, editing, and what makes the final cut. It's amazing!

Can you walk us through your morning skincare routine?
I use Cetaphil, Klurskin serums (Hyaluronic + Vitamin C Serum, Tea Tree + Eucalyptus Organic Botanical Serum), moisturizer, and my Cle Cosmetics Foaming Cleanser. That's not in any particular order, but those are the products that I apply in the morning!

What about daily makeup? How do you get your brows so perfect?
I like the natural look, so I only try to use the face basics (foundation, concealer, highlighter) and mascara. As for my brows, my holy grail product is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Pomade. Thank you Anastasia Soare for helping me make my brow game so strong (and dad, because y'know... genetics)! I get a perfect brow by concealing after I groom them. Concealing your brows after filling them in makes such a big difference. Aside from that, I don't like to touch them often. I don't shave anything besides the middle hairs and a few surrounding ones that don't fall where they belong. I like the messy, uneven look. They're imperfectly perfect caterpillars!

How about your nightly skincare routine? Any holy grail products you love?
I like to use a mixture of products. Occasionally I'll do the Boscia Luminizing Black Facial Peel Mask, Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay, and Sunday Riley's Luna Sleeping Night Oil. In general, I like to exfoliate and moisturize my skin with whatever product can get the job done. It's important to take care of your skin before it's too late.

What is your relationship with makeup like? How do you view makeup?
I have a good relationship with makeup! I used to be very insecure and wear it every single day, but then I realized makeup isn't permanent, so it was important for me to learn how to embrace myself and what I view as my flaws. Now it depends on what mood I'm in! I'd say I wear makeup about two or three times a week. I think makeup is a great way to express yourself and show off your features.

Are there any makeup trends that you love, even if you don’t wear them yourself?
I love the glossy lids and messy, brushed up brow trend!

Any makeup you’ve done in the past that you look back on and cringe? (Or any old trends that you hope come back?)
When I first explored filling in my brows I had a bad tendency of making them look too arched, and I always appeared to be angry. My face looked so squarish. That was around the time I started modeling, so I looked really odd in all of my shoots. My expressions were very dull too, but I was still learning. It's cool to look back on images of myself, no matter how much I despise them, because I can see how quickly I've improved. I hope to continue improving and growing as a model... I also hope that flared clothing and jean on jean outfits make a comeback!
