Here,
the story of how indie-pop duo Cults – Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin – gained their own following with just four songs.
How did you two meet?
Madeline: Brian was my brother's friend, and I think my brother and my mom were trying to keep me away from him because they thought he was a bad kid. We finally met when he was on tour with my brother, managing his band. Brian ended up sneaking me in to a show at House of Blues because I wasn't 21 yet, even though he wasn't 21 either! And we've been together ever since.
Your brother wanted to keep you guys apart?
Brian: He told me in no uncertain terms to stay away from his sister.
Ha, well, that worked! After you met, how long did it take for you guys to start making music together?
Brian: Right when we met, I drove her up to San Francisco from San Diego, and during that eight-hour drive we were listening to music nonstop, and found out we liked the same stuff.
Madeline: Or that we didn’t.
Brian: We started making up songs, and eventually turned it into something real.
When did you put your songs up on the Internet?
Madeline: We put them up but didn’t advertise immediately. I’d send them to my friends and say, “Don’t tell anybody, we’re just doing this for fun.” Then it had only been a few days since we put it up and someone texted me, “Oh my god, you’re on Gorilla vs. Bear!” Then a couple hours later it was on Pitchfork and a couple blogs, and it ended up getting a lot of attention.
What did it feel like to suddenly realize everyone was listening to your music?
Madeline: It was stressful at first. We had bloggers emailing us saying, ‘Hey, do you have any more songs we could write about or put up?’ We felt pressured at first, but after the first week we got over it and were like, ‘We’ll just do whatever we were doing.’
You use some pretty interesting samples — like cult leader speeches.
Brian: The samples evolved naturally because of our hobbies—sitting around watching documentaries and YouTube videos. We have this big fascination with cults and we were watching all these videos and they naturally flowed into how we were feeling about the songs.
How so?
Brian: Basically, a lot of our record is about growing up and having the freedom to make radical choices in your life, versus being forced into adulthood. I think the samples we have are about people who have chosen radical lives, and are urging people to make radical decisions and do stuff they wouldn’t normally do. It’s much more interesting to me to have real people talking in a song—it adds a documentary feel to it.
Brian, so you’ve been in bands since you were 13?
Brian: Just like any other kid from the suburbs.
But one of them was a Slayer cover band!
Brian: That was my first band! Growing up in Atlanta, there were only seven or eight skate-punk kids at the school, so we stuck together so we wouldn’t get beat up. So we’d hang out in my basement and play Rancid and Slayer songs.
Madeline, your step dad owns a recording studio. What were your early experiences with music?
Madeline: One night my stepdad was recording his own band. I was eight–years-old and really hyper and I ran over to his microphone and started singing and he was like, “Yeah, that sounds good, sing on this!” and it was that Adolescents song “Amoeba.” For fun I ended up recording a cover of that song. Now and then he would ask me to sing on the songs, and I did a seven-inch that was released in Germany.
Who are some other musical couples you guys admire?
Madeline: Ike and Tina! We’re most like them.
Since you’re influenced by hip-hop and girl groups—who are some you like?
Brian: As far as girl groups go, we like the edgier girl groups like The Shangri-Las.
Madeline: Also these little girls that are nine and eleven called Patience and Prudence.
Brian: We totally jacked their singing. Madeline sounds like a nine-year-old! Hip-hop is a big part of it, too, the idea of repetition as a form of change throughout a song.
Is there any kind of music you guys don’t agree on?
Brian: I really like Squarepusher and IDM electronic music and she can’t stand it. I personally hate classic rock and she really likes that. But both those things sneak their way into our record.
What are you guys most looking forward to in 2011?
Brian: Playing Coachella– that’s been a secret dream we’d never admit because we never thought it could happen. And SXSW—so far we have 11 shows! Playing big festivals and finally getting music out to people. We’ve been very withholding because we wanted to come out with a full-length record instead of a bunch of seven-inches, and become a real band. We’re psyched on the music and can’t wait for people to hear it!

What is the best/stupidest souvenir you're brought back from tour?
Denise has a peculiar tendency to collect random items off the street. She tries to bring home broken globes, giant pine cones, fancy rocks...anything really. I suppose the best item is also the stupidest–a massive lamp made out of a tree-trunk that we picked up either in Florida or Texas. It may be a little gaudy, but it makes our practice space look like Fraggle Rock, so it is a win in my book.
Tell us an inside joke that we won’t get but will make the members of your band die laughing.
We used to call one of our band members “SANDY PANTS” because he insisted that we had to drive forty minutes out of our way to our hotel to change out of his swim suit (we were at a beach in France) before we played a festival. I accidentally referred to him by this name in an interview with zero context so when the interview was published they mistakenly printed his name as “SANDY PANTS” in the article.

I like ghosts and aliens–they're kind of magic. I believe in Magic Johnson.

So the receptive, the curious, and the ignorant walk into a bar. No one drinks. There they see the protector, the destroyer, and the confused playing Three Times. This scares them. They haven't seen anyone play this game for ten years. In the middle of the game, Black Crow Boy is born from the eye of the confused and eats half of the people in the bar.The builder steps into the room and sits down to play.
