Shop UO UO Blog

With an energetic music scene (fuelled by local college network FSU), a farm-to-table foodie contingent, first-rate bike shops, tattoo parlors and dive bars galore, Tallahassee is a city that should be on your radar. It’s definitely on ours, as Urban Outfitters opens its first store in the Florida city this week, complete with a guitar shop, On/Off coffee bar, an outdoor stage, and the largest hand painted sign of any UO store. To celebrate our debut in Tally (as it’s affectionately known), we enlisted Barbara, Elizabeth and Sarah, the local creatives behind online zine Bloom, to show us around the city that is, quite literally, blossoming right now.

The On/Off coffee cart serves coffee, tea, and cocoa from companies devoted to paving the way in perfecting  their incredible sourcing practices. Pride of place: A Counter Culture coffee roaster.
The new Urban Outfitters space, built in the 1940s, was once a storage space for animal feed and, more recently, home to a small-press printing company.
The 10ft hand painted sign is one of Urban Outfitters' largest.
The Tallahassee store features a guitar shop and an outdoor space with a stage for concerts and performances.

Maclay Gardens
"Take a stroll around the beautiful ornamental gardens or spend some time on the five miles of nature trails offered by this historical state park in the heart of Tallahassee. Weather willing, fire up the grill for a picnic near the lake. (Amenities include: reflection pool hiking trails, running and equestrian trails, swimming, fishing, and canoeing)."

Leon Sinkholes
"In the heart of Apalachicola National Forest, FL, lies the hidden gem of Leon Sinks Geological Area. Sixty-foot rope swings; 72-degree year-round water, and miles of hiking trails make Leon Sinks the perfect warm weather hang spot."
"Trail maps await at each trailhead, but print extras depending on the size of your beer cooler."
Ten Speed Greens Organic Farm
"Two total babes run this community-supported farm on only a quarter acre of land, providing high quality organic produce to nearby restaurants and the community."
"Fresh produce includes watermelon radish, beets, carrots, and greens of all varieties; herbs, and other veggies. When they’re not busy farming, you might pass Claire or Danielle delivering produce via bike to surrounding customers. Grateful we are!"

Krank It Up
"This open community bike shop provides a space for people to have free-of-charge access to the tools and know-how necessary when working on bike repairs. Stop by for free assistance from any of the mechanics on shift at the time. Pictured: Veteran Krank It Up! Volunteer Nelson Ball helps an FSU student find the right cog for his mountain bike."

Bread & Roses Food Co-Op and Kitchen
"This co-op is an independent, member-worker owned, sustainable, community-building business, supplying low-cost, high-quality groceries. It’s constantly growing with new shipments arriving every Monday, which are tailored to requests."
"They also host community events like the annual vegan chili cook-off and mac and cheese bake off. You'll meet some of the nicest people in town at the co-op!"
RetroFit Records
"RetroFit Records carries a great selection of vinyl: From vintage to brand new. Cool owners Sharod and Bradley keep the store stocked with records to suit all tastes. You can also catch great shows from local and national acts at the shop, so be sure to check out their schedule.”
"Local band Grounded tunes up during a house show."
"Pink perfection camelias in bloom at Maclay Gardens."
"Bloom’s Elizabeth Georges with her gluten free pizza, courtesy of all-time vegan stoner food fave Soul Vegetarian. Made with love and for love, help support the way of Jah and the joy in our bellies by grabbing a slice from this local spot."

About Bloom

Bloom was born in the foothills of North Carolina and bred in the quaint town of Tallahassee, FL. Raised by three women who share a similar affection for good design, holistic well-being, nutritional know-how, and wilderness wanderings, Bloom has nested quite nicely in the rich local community and beautifully scenic countryside of North Florida.

Tallahassee provides a pace of life conducive to the theology of Bloom: Ritual gatherings with good friends, plant-based recipes picked from backyard gardens, leisurely hikes, hand-craft work, and DIY body care experiments. An encouraging community built upon creativity and inspired by nature, Tallahassee lends a patient understanding to the philosophies Bloom continues to explore.
