Bonjour! I'm Soko, I'm French, and I play music and direct videos and act sometimes. I also like cats, romantic comedies, vegan ice creams, aliens, dancing and dreaming.
Who gave you the nickname Soko? Do you have any other nicknames that friends or family use?
It's from my last name, Sokolinski. SOKO was my dad's nickname. Most people didn't even know he had a "real" name. He died when I was a kid; it makes me feel close to him to carry on in my life with his name. My friends also call me "Sokes," "Soky," "Sokito," Sokette," and my family calls me "Nanie" or "Ma petite Soko."
We're super into your personal style. Could you describe it to us in as few words as possible?
Trying to hide my fat under weird clothes. I like a boy-girl mix — I'm not a Tom Boy, but I like a lot of men's clothes. Vintage '70s, '80s, '90s, cozy, comfy, punky, black and white, and pajamas!
What's your everyday uniform like?
High waisted acid washed jeans, platform shoes (MISHKA, from Argentina, are my favorite shoes ever), round sunglasses, a hat, necklaces with saints for protection, a ring with gemstones for protection, little girls socks, a vintage T-shirt of my favorite bands, and a large overcoat.
What's your most prized item you own and why?
The ring I have on my little finger; my mom gave it to me for my 16th birthday when I left home. It's her and my dad's wedding ring that she made into one after he died. I'd probably die if I lost that. And recently, I've been wearing my girlfriend's Virgin Mary pendants around my neck — she's had it for 15 years and just gave it to me to protect me before I went to New York... so precious.
What's an essential item of clothing or accessory that every girl should have?
A pen and a notebook to write their dreams down and make them come true.
What did you dress like when you were a teen? Who were some of your style icons?
I was dressing like a skater boy 'till I was about 14, haha! Then I turned all hippie and wanted to dress like Jimi Hendrix.
How about your favorite style icons today?
Wednesday Addams, Boy George (in the '80s) and Beetlejuice.
On a scale of 1 to 10, how much does your clothing tell us who you are?
A 10 I guess. What I wear really reflects or dictates what mood I'm in daily. It's weird — even when I do movies, I feel like I still don't know my character until I'm in her clothes/shoes.
Aside from style, what are some other ways that you express yourself?
I make playlists all the time, I'm always digging for new music. I make playlists with stupid names that dictate my mood like "Dance With Me," "Lay Down With Me," "Good Morning Sunshine," "Punk It Up," "Be Kind to Me," "Love Me Up." Hahaha, the list goes on... I make playlist for friends too — that's my signature birthday gift!
And also, obviously, I write absolutely every day. I have an insane amount of notebooks that look like old magic books, filled with thoughts, poetry, chords, lyrics...
Do you ever listen to your own music? If so, other than yourself, who are some of the musicians you listen to the most?
First, I NEVER listen to my own music. Second, I'm a music nerd. This is gonna go on forever. My favorite bands are: The Cure, The Smiths, Simon & Garfunkel, Talking Heads, Belle and Sebastian, Television, Suicide / Alan Vega, Johnny Thunders, Yo La Tengo, The Only Ones, Electrelane, The Slits. Lately I've been really into the new Unknown Mortal Orchestra album, John Maus, King Krule, La Femme, I always love me some Ariel Pink, Mac DeMarco, MGMT, Kurt Vile… I could go on and on and on and on.
What's your favorite song lyric of all time? And why?
"I know I'm unlovable, you don't have to tell, I don't have much in my life, but take it, it's yours." by the genius Morrissey.
Most of the time, I feel like I get him. I get his sadness and darkness. I feel like I can give everything to people, but most time people don't actually want it, so yup, this song “Unlovable” off of The World Won't Listen, is a BIG HIT in my heart.
If you had to choose between acting and singing, which would you choose and why?
I like acting only with the right story and director, but most of all, what keeps me alive is MUSIC. But, why would I choose? I love that there's so many mediums to be creative these days. I love directing my videos, making my artwork… all of it. Whatever keeps me inspired!
What is the most important thing you feel that you have ever done in your career?
I always feel like I haven't done anything and I don't deserve any credit for anything, but then sometimes I step out of my self-sabotaging mood and realize I've done so much already. I think the one thing that was the most important to me so far has been this movie Augustine directed by Alice Winocour. I won best actress for it in Argentina last year, which made me feel suddenly somewhat of a more legit "actress” hahaha! Before that, I would never dare to say I act.
In your life?
I've been constantly on the go, living out of my suitcase in so many different cities, places, and friend's couch for seven years. It's both very unsettling and scary at times, but also has allowed me to see so much beauty of the world and meet such incredible people. I'm really thankful for all of this traveling and daily life lessons. Now the idea of just being in one place, without moving all the time is quite frightening.
What's the best advice you've ever been given?
Follow your dreams and never give up 'till your dreams become your reality.
Short hair or long hair?
Hum. I've had long hair for a while, and I just chopped them all and dyed them white for the first time. So far I'm loving it. I feel like Andy Warhol!
Baseball caps or floppy hats?
Too hard… BOTH! Though I do have a crazy collection of baseball hats.
Dressing up or dressing down?
Paris, New York or L.A.?
L.A. No... New York. No. Uh... I can't chose between those two, but I think L.A. since I've lived there for five years.
