Puro Instinct

As the front-women for L.A.-based band Puro Instinct, sisters Piper and Skylar Kaplan make dreamy music tinged with equal parts candy and noir. Here, they spend a fairytale Sunday with photographer Logan White, and model looks from our summer dress collection.

PI "When I think about my dreams for this summer, I'd feel like a brat asking for anything else. I'm already playing in Europe with the band!" –Skylar

PI"My absences at school are totally through the roof! I had to take three days off just to go play in New York. I wasn't complaining because I was stoked, but my teachers don't really get it." –Skylar

PI"If people are worried about what I'm wearing, it's good someone is, because I don't give a shit." –Piper

PI"Music is my number one priority – I'm more concerned with how we sound than if there's a stain on my dress." – Piper

PI"She's super protective of me, she inspires me and I look up to her a lot, I always have." –Skylar

PI"My sister and I have always been really close. We're in a band together so there are probably more fights than there typically would be– that's only because bands are closer than friends, closer than family." –Skylar

PI"I can't pinpoint exactly why I love L.A. so much, I just know I would never want to live anywhere else. The people are out of their minds, the weather is really nice."– Skylar

PI"L.A. is full of good thrift stores and good record stores. We've got a killer raw foods scene and all my derelict friends are here. We've got some good music from time to time. You've got the mountains, the beaches, some babes... what more could a girl want?" –Piper

PI"My school is in East L.A., where I have academics all morning then my theatre classes in the afternoon. I'm doing so much music with the band that I wanted to experiment a little bit. I get home then I have band practice until about ten at night. That's why it's nice just to nap."- Skylar

PI"You can work on a song for two minutes but it's already written in your head, so you can sit down and record and have a masterpiece. Or you can work on a song for two and half years and still end up loving it because you cried over it so long, even if it's total crap. My favorite songs make me think of other things I love outside of the music."–Piper

PI"We're influenced by classical composers, Martin Newell and The Cleaners from Venus, French composers and all of their melodies. We mix classic with experimental pop music." –Skylar

PI"If we signed the world's greatest soundman before we left on our tour, that'd be a dream come true. Other than that, if the van doesn't explode while we're in it, it's going to be pretty cool."–Piper

PI"What I wear on stage and what I wear to school has to be different. What we wear is so over the top and glittery, it wouldn't be right anywhere else." –Skylar

PI"Follow your dreams, don't take no for an answer and learn how to shred. Girls, get out there, listen to records and be as rad as rad will allow you to be." –Piper
