Hi Olivia! Describe your style in one sentence.
Sailor Moon stuck in the '70s with too many rainbows.
Who are your main style icons or style inspirations?
I always have trouble thinking of style icons once I'm asked. I like the Olsen Twins. I love that recently they've been wearing beautiful, vintage Chanel. I've been really into that. I love Avril Lavigne, Sailor Moon, and Marie Antoinette.
How has your style changed over the years?
I kind of dress [now] like I did when I was a really little kid. I feel like the best clothes are made for kids when they're under five, so I still wear things with lots of rainbows, pink and frills. My mom used to make me a lot of dresses so I have this one dress that has fairies all over it that she made me.
When I was 13 I kind of wanted to be scene and emo, but the way I did that was wearing black capri pants and then tights that were striped underneath them and Converse. So I would say I was definitely looking at Avril Lavigne too much?
Then, I started wearing. I've never worn a lot of accessories but recently I've started pairing outfits with accessories. And, also, the notion of dressing comfortably with clothes you want to live in rather than just looking good. I love clothes that have a story. I'm really obsessed with the idea of someone's favorite T-shirt. Like, you wear this shirt all the time and you have so many special memories in it but I have like twenty favorite T-shirts [laughs]. Now I'm experimenting with make-up, even though it's not that different, and also hair color, which has been fun.
Converse on my feet with Levi's shorts! The hat is a Universal Studios product but I got it at Electric Forest—it's the hat from Back to The Future 2! This necklace is by Javier Mezza and the bracelet is Jennifer Fischer that one of my producers gave me as a gift. The shirt I got in L.A. and it's by Cowboys and Angels.
The dress is Manoush, the shoes are Valetto, and the glasses are Miu Miu. The bag is from Etsy—it was a dungeons and dragons bag but I made it into a purse.
So, what makeup have you experimenting with these days?
Right now I'm going for this thing called “zombie chic” [laughs]. I'll wear bright red eye shadow around my eyes and I kind of look like I'm dying but I've been having a lot of fun with it. And I got this YSL purple mascara that I really love. I love white and purple eyeliner and adding jewels to my face.
Where do you usually shop for your clothes?
I shop for a lot of my clothes in Portland because it's so cheap and I know all the stores there. Red Light and House of Vintage are probably my favorites. Here, I like Beacon's Closet in Williamsburg a lot and there's this jewelry store on West 26th but I don't remember what it's called. It's so small and it's covered in jewelry. I love shopping when I'm traveling too, because I love to have a piece of the city. Recently I shopped at Manoush in Paris and I was super obsessed with that. I've been getting into having one nice, maybe-expensive piece rather than a bunch of shit I don't wear that much.
What's the most stylish city you've been to?
Definitely Tokyo or London. Just, amazing style. A place like Paris is too boring in terms of style.
That's funny to me because I feel like Paris has this fashionable reputation.
I mean, I love France, I love the culture there, but I think a lot of Paris is stuck in its traditions and people are afraid to stray from that. So, everyone dresses up everyday but I don't think it's stylish all the time.
Japan is way more modern and futuristic.
It's so futuristic and crazy. I think London is like that too because in all the underground scenes in London, people get decked out, kind of like in Tokyo. Then New York, people wear a lot of gray and it's depressing and I don't really understand why.
Is there any piece of clothing or accessory that you have in your closet that's your favorite, or that is particularly special to you?
This [tooth] ring is really special to me, because I'd thought about it for so long. I also have this Curious George backpack I've had since I was two that I really like. Then my mother gave me her jeans she wore all through Lebanon and Israel that she embroidered and it has the name of her kibbutz on them. It's nice wearing something that has so many memories of my mom; I get to wear them and they have a new life. I also have this four-leaf clover necklace my parents got me when they were in Las Vegas when I was in 3rd grade that's special to me. Also, my mom's nameplate bracelet she got when she was a little kid.
What would you say is the craziest thing in your closet is? Or, the thing that gets the most stares on the street?
People never know what to say when they see my Totoro backpack on the street. Then I have this big furry hat that sort of looks like a mullet that keeps me warm in the winter. Every look together is eclectic though. Basically all my fur coats...I have this one fur coat that's blue suede that has tons and tons of fur on it and people look at me like I'm an asshole [laughs].
The tutu is from No Relation and I'm wearing a bra from Lily's that I just put over the tutu. The boots are Doc Martens but the laces are from this shirt I tore up in Barcelona.
Who's your favorite fashion photographer and why?
I love Tim Walker, David LaChapelle, Ryan McGinley, Synchrodogs and I like Annie Leibovitz as a fashion photographer but I like her more intimate work better.
I like two different kinds of photography: one where it's all messy and things aren't where they're supposed to be but it's beautiful and capturing a moment that's really special. The other kind is very precise, where everything is in its right place. That's kind of my life and my style too.
If you weren't a photographer, what would you be doing?
I'd probably be styling or—I just can't think of anything else that I'd want to do, ever. There's nothing I want to do more [laughs]. If photography didn't exist I'd probably be styling, writing or interior decorating.
Who's your dream photo subject that you haven't shot yet?
The ATL Twins, Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake, The Strokes, Beach House, Beyonce, and Lana del Rey.
What's the most memorable moment you've ever had on the set of a fashion shoot you were doing?
I just shot this commercial and in the post-production meeting the client cried.
Oh my god!
And, my producer cried too. That felt really good and I was so happy with it. At the end of the shoot, saying that's a wrap to one of the most amazing projects I've ever completed was really awesome.Olivia Bee
I actually got this top at Disney World [laughs]. I was shooting there and it's part of a swimsuit, which I needed to go work in the water. I got it at Downtown Disney at a surf shop. The pants and shoes are from House of Vintage in Portland. The necklace is from Necromance in London and this tooth ring is from Love to Death.
