Hi Nicole! Introduce yourself!
Hi hi! I’m 23 years old, a Libra, ENFJ [Editor’s Note: Extraverted Feeling with Introverted Intuition… Google it!], a Michigan native and Chicago transplant.
What do you do for a living?
I do a little bit of everything! Lots of freelance work at the moment; right now I'm focusing mostly on styling. I style test shoots for a few agencies in Chicago, and I've also done some styling out in L.A.
Are the models easy to work with, or have you run into some divas?
Oh, you know. There's a diva every now and then. But I work with a lot of young, new models, so they're usually super sweet and receptive. Who has time for divas these days?
Have you always been interested in fashion?
Apparently, yes. My mom tells me that I wanted to wear leotards every day when I was younger. Leotards with saddle shoes. So sassy. I still wear both.
And you're still in school, right?
I am. I'm a fashion marketing major and I'll be graduating in less than one month!
Congrats! What are your plans for post-school life?
While I've appreciated my time spent in Chicago, I'm ready for my next endeavor. It's looking like L.A. I've been a Midwesterner all my life, and I feel like I deserve some sun. I'm an open book, so we'll see what happens.
Do your friends ever ask you for style advice, or do your friends have different styles from you?
Of course! My friends ask for my advice, and I also ask for theirs. It's always nice to hear a second opinion. Do we always listen to each other? Not really. I'd say all my friends are pretty stylish, but we definitely have our differences. I think some of my friends probably hate my overalls, but hey, whatever.
How would you describe your personal style?
I like mixing tomboy (although I hate that word) with girly: a loose tank, skinnies, and boots; boyfriend jeans, a cropped shirt, and wedges; an oversized tee with a skirt. I'll throw something weird in there every once in a while, like a pineapple print sweater.
What's your favorite thing to wear currently?
Some of my favorite things right now are my Converse leather high-tops, my plaid UNIF skirt, AllSaints leather shorts, and any quality loose fitting tee or tank. I’m also loving all of UO’s Reformed by the Reformation stuff. Dainty midi rings and bracelets. For nails, Go Ginza by Essie.
Who would be your dream movie star to style? What would you love to dress them in?
I would put Leonardo DiCaprio back in his Titanic attire <3.
Your other passion is traveling. Where are some of the coolest places you've traveled? Anything crazy happen while you were vacationing somewhere?
Of course! Paris, Amsterdam, lots of cities in Germany, Brussels, Belgium (huge fan of their chocolate). I really love Sedona. Most recently I went to Jamaica where I climbed a waterfall and was kissed on the face by a dolphin. And I do have a crazy story: last summer, three friends and I were driving through the desert in California looking for these specific dunes. GPS in my hand, we came to an intersection, turned left, and drove straight for a couple miles. The GPS goes nuts, we pull over for a minute to regroup, continue to drive straight, and suddenly we were back at that initial intersection. WORM HOLE, TIME TRAVEL, I DON'T KNOW. But I swear it happened, and I have three witnesses.
I heard you're really good at voice impressions. Who can you do?! Have you ever tricked someone on the phone?
I've never tricked anyone on the phone, because my voice impressions are mostly done through song. Lana Del Rey, Miley Cyrus, Grimes. Also, Creed. Any rock band from the ‘90s, really.
What are some of your favorite bands right now?
I go through these phases where I'll listen to a few bands nonstop for a couple weeks. Right now it's Rhye, more specifically the songs "Open" and "Last Dance." So groovy. Also, Crystal Fighters, Haim, Austra and Alt-J. There's also this Chicago-based band called Glass Lux. Super cool, super dancey. Look out for them!
What bands do you think have great style? I feel like a lot of bands end up looking the same.
Very true, which is why I tend to appreciate the fashion of a more eclectic group of musicians. Although we don't necessarily share the same style, I love how Ninja and Yolandi of Die Antwoord dress. Every music video, I'm always like, “DANG, they look cool.” Also, André 3000, Bob Dylan, Morrissey (circa 1984), Gwen Stefani, Lykke Li, Lou Doillon—the list goes on.
If someone offered you a lifetime, well-paid gig of being a cat stylist, would you do it? You could no longer style humans, only cats.
Only cats?! Ugh. As much as I like cats, I'd have to say no. I could never give up styling humans.
