Beauty is Boring:

Made in Korea

From snail extract to adorable packaging, the beauty products we’re coveting the most right now all happen to hail from Korea. We sent makeup artist and photographer Robin Black of Beauty is Boring a bunch of products from TONYMOLY, The Face Shop, Holika Holika and Peripera to play with and report back. Read on for her insider tips and tricks and her how-to for a tangerine dream beauty look using our favorite Korean brands.

We all have our beauty secrets...

the perfect eyelash curler that you hide so your friends don't "borrow" it or the dermatologist on your speed dial. Mine involves a clandestine mission into the heart of L.A.'s Korea Town. I have to navigate an alley, go through a storefront into a back hallway, climb up five flights of stairs to an extremely unsafe looking elevator, and once I reach the right floor, try to remember my way through a maze of identical corridors.

What could be worth this rather un-glamorous journey? Only the best facial massage I've ever had! And on top of (very intensely) massaging my face, my lovely Korean esthetician (with the help of Google translate) has given me a serious education in Korean beauty products.

To start with, Korean products are super cute. I am a grown woman but I still get excited every time I reach for my hand cream that comes in a tiny panda bear or apply lip balm from a small red cherry. And then there is the overall quality. Korean skincare products tend to be very active, featuring ingredients that are meant to get results. And when it comes to makeup, colors are generally sheer yet easy to build, and they come in a rainbow of fun shades. One of my favorite Korean makeup products is Peripera Peri's Tint Jelly Stick. It comes in blue, green and yellow, but changes color on your lips into bright long-lasting stains. My friend Megumi brought back a few tubes from her last visit to Tokyo and I've been hooked ever since!

This look reminds me of orange sherbet ice cream…and that reminds me of summer, which is just around the corner! Orange is a cool way to transition into warm weather. It looks good on a wide range of skin tones and the Korean products are so sheer that you can use them to add a hint of warmth or build them up into a statement color.

Start by prepping skin with TONYMOLY Red Appletox Honey Cream, TONYMOLY Egg Pore Silky Smooth Balm, TONYMOLY Mini Lip Balm SPF 15 and TONYMOLY Panda's Dream Brightening Eye Base. On Courtney’s cheeks I used Peripera Ah Much Real My Cushion Blusher in Happy Orange.

For bright-yet-beautiful eyes, apply The Face Shop Lovely Me : Ex You in Orange Syrup to lids and blend up to the brow bone. Finish with Peripera Very Nice Pen Eyeliner and Holika Holika Magic Pole Waterproof Mascara in Black.

Paint lips with TONYMOLY Delight Tint Crayon-Neon in Orange and dab a little Holika Holika Holy Berry Jelly Tint in Peach on top for a subtle shine.
