On the Road:

Let's Bike Austin

We took a trip to one of our favorite southern cities, where we put together a cycle gang of creative locals and toured downtown, hopping off at their go-to pit stops along the way. Follow their route with our Austin Bike Map.

What do you love about Austin?

The kind people, the laid-back atmosphere.

Why do you cycle?

There's nothing like the feeling of gliding along when you get to ride fast, having the wind blow through your hair and on your face, it makes me feel free.

What’s the soundtrack to your life?

It changes a lot, but right now I'm loving Ben Howard and Autre Ne Veut, both of whom I have gotten to shoot and are great people. Bon Iver is a constant favorite.

Current obsessions?

My new Converse high-tops from Urban Outfitters, a recently acquired pair of vintage earrings, fresh-cut flowers, and dried mango as a snack.

When and where do you feel most alive?

When I'm traveling, hands-down. It's my second passion.

What do you love about Austin?

It's a very fertile place for a creative mind.

Why do you cycle?

I ride mostly for fun, as workdays are so busy.

Where do you like to stop off on your bike?

I spend many a free afternoon / evening at the Alamo Drafthouse seeing movies. Although Violet Crown Cinema is vying for my affection…service industry night!

What’s the soundtrack to your life?

Lindstrøm.

Current obsession?

My Dremel tool.
You can do EVERYTHING with a Dremel.

When and where do you feel most alive?

Performing onstage is my biggest fix. Luckily I get to do that with Ramesh, the band and the person. His music is incredible and heartfelt and I am so psyched I get to play cello with him and all these other wonderful musicians.

What do you love about Austin?

There are tons of cool people, music lovers and artists. It's easy to feel at home here even if you've only lived here for a short period of time. There's a real sense of community.

Why do you cycle?

It's one of the best ways to get around! Austin is really bike-friendly, so it's easy to cruise around the city.

Where do you like to stop off on your bike?

One of my favorite things to do on my days off is go to the "blue hanger". It's the Goodwill Outlet located on the Southside of town. Everything that isn't sold at Goodwill stores is sent there and is sold by the pound. It takes a lot of digging, but you can find really amazing stuff and literally spend less than a dollar.

What’s the soundtrack to your life?

I'm on a big nostalgia kick and have been listening to a lot of albums from the early-mid ‘90s, from Nine Inch Nails to Tupac and Oasis. New artists I like are NZCA/LINES and Hooray for Earth.

Current obsession?

Binge-watching TV.

Endless Sunshine.

Why do you cycle?

Riding a bike is definitely the most efficient way to get from point A to B in NYC, so whenever it’s warm enough, biking is my preferred mode of transport!

Where do you like to stop off on your bike?

Home! Free time is a rare bird in my life, so if I don't fall asleep immediately I'm usually working on an art project or drinking wine at my kitchen table with a friend or two.

This week I've been revisiting an old favorite, Wire's "Chairs Missing."

What do you love about Austin?

It's the only youthful city with a good underground music culture within driving distance of my family.

Why do you cycle?

I ride bikes mostly during the festivals as a means of skipping the traffic and parking, but my girlfriend is trying to get me into going on more leisure rides with her.

Where do you like to stop off on your bike?

I'm usually on the East Side where most of my favorite bars are. If the weather's nice and I'm off work in the evening, I'm always down for a game of pick-up soccer at Zilker Park. There are usually about 50 or more people playing.

What’s the soundtrack to your life?

Mostly dance music. I really like to stream live sets from my favorite DJs on Soundcloud. If I'm trying to get a break from driving rhythms I'll put on something like the Studio One dub/reggae Youtube channel.

Current obsession?

I just watched the last episode of True Detective, which has been my obsession for the past month or so.

When and where do you feel most alive?

I feel the most alive when I'm DJing a really good party and everything is coming together just right.
