About a Guy:

Dillon Francis

We spoke to Dillon Francis about his alter ego DJ Hansel and his cat, James Mittens Francis.

Interview by Katie Gregory

Hey Dillon! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Yes, my name is Dillon Francis and I'm a music producer who makes weird music.

How did you get started?

I got into music when I was born. I feel like every single person is naturally into music. [Laughs.] Into music production, though, I moved to Atlanta to go and work with my friend Cory Nitta. I'd always been really interested in it. When I was 18, that's when I really got into turntables and stuff like that, and that's kind of where it all started.

And you've been touring for a while now, right?

Yeah, I've been touring two or three years.

And you've been doing the Mad Decent Block Party recently. Can you tell us one of the craziest things you've seen there or one of the other festivals you've been performing at?

Hmm. Craziest thing I've seen. There hasn't been that many crazy, crazy things that I've seen. Except for like, there's this character that I made on Instagram called DJ Hansel, I created him two or three weeks ago, he's like this German, deep house purist and kids are already making big face cutouts of that character and signs that say "Where's DJ Hansel?" All this stuff that has to do with it. That was really cool that people were drawn to that so fast and then started making signs for it. It was just really special for me.

He's a pretty funny character; I was watching a bunch of the videos earlier. Can you tell us where that came from?

It came from my friend. He had gone to Berlin and his tour guide, he's not really a tour guide but I can't think of his real name right now, he was exactly like that and when my friend told me stories about it, I just kind of based the character off it. Then just took it in whatever direction I did.

What are some of the other characters you do on Instagram? You've got a lot of videos on there now.

They're all just making fun of everybody, I guess. Like the classic drunk girl that's like at a club all the time and doesn't want to leave the club because she's thinks she's going to miss something, or like the classic white guy that's like really into Lacoste and a very blue collar. And then just other stuff, like me calling girls and them not wanting to hang out with me, but I'm pretending to be whatever girl it is.

Do you have a problem hanging out with girls in real life or is that just something you made up?

[Laughs.] No, no. It's just like... what's the word. It's self-deprecating! It's always funny, self-deprecation is always good for comedy and that's the main goal of it.

"My cat's name is James Mittens Francis. My favorite thing about him is that he's a dick. Like, he does whatever he wants."

Did you ever have dreams of being a stand-up comic?

I never wanted to be a stand-up comic, but I did always have dreams of becoming an actor when I was younger. Like Jim Carrey was my favorite actor. When I saw Dumb and Dumber and The Mask, I was always obsessed. But I don't think I could ever do stand-up because that's just a whole other ball game.

Now that you're traveling a lot, where's your favorite place to travel?

My favorite place to travel is Norway. I like going to Oslo. Oslo's one of my favorite places. It's just really beautiful in the summertime. I've been there in winter, like in the start of it so I didn't really get the full taste of it because they're pretty bad, but I love Oslo so much. That place is amazing. It's like a better Silver Lake.

So then in the US, would you pick East Coast or West Coast?

I would pick the West coast.

Any particular reason?

Because I'm from the West Coast! Hometown, I love L.A. L.A.'s my favorite place in the world.

Hometown pride! One more very important question. Can you tell us about your cat?

My cat's name is James Mittens Francis. My favorite thing about him is that he's a dick. Like, he does whatever he wants. If you leave him alone he'll come and hang out with you, but if you try to handle him too much he'll just be like, "Fuck off."

What do you do with him when you're on the road?

He actually doesn't stay with me. He hasn't stayed with me for a while. He just stays at my parents' place and I'll go visit him whenever I can.

So would you pick cats or dogs if you could only choose one?
