Employee of the Month:

Ben Kopp

Interview by Ally Mullen

Meet Ben, a crazy talented graphic designer that used to do math but now mostly just draws awesome stuff while trying not to die from laughing.

Introduce yourself!

What up! My name’s Ben Kopp. I’m 23 and I’m from Syracuse, NY.

What do you do at Urban Outfitters?

I’m a graphic designer here at Urban. I push some pixels and draw a lot of funny pictures for posters, tote bags, emails and a bunch of other stuff. It’s definitely a fun job.

Where did you go to school?

I went to SUNY Oswego. Originally I went there for math, wanting to be a math teacher, but somewhere along the lines I switched over to graphic design. Just a bit of a difference between the two.

How come you made the switch?

I was good at math, but it’s mad boring. Who knew? But in school, I had the chance to meet some really cool, creative people that I admired, and they encouraged me to take some design classes. I hadn’t taken an art class before that, but it turned out to be a natural fit.

What was the worst job you’ve ever had?

Working at a grocery store. It’s really boring and you have to deal with some crazy customers. It’s the only other job I had really. Definitely wasn’t that great. I’ve got some funny stories from working there.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Definitely wanted to be a Power Ranger.

Which one?

Red!

In school, what did your notebooks look like?

My notebooks were amazing! Full of Simpsons and Doug Funnie drawings, Jay-Z lyrics, and a bunch of random slogans. I wish I saved them all. Never had too many actual notes in them, just a bunch of doodles. They were really dope. Pretty much exactly how my sketchbooks look now.

Who are some of your favorite artists?

So-Me is definitely my number one. He’s too good and his work is what made me realize graphic design is actually cool. I really love Todd James’ work. There’s such a good sense of humor in his work. Parra too; his drawing style is great and his type is perfect.

What kind of music can we catch you listening to at work?

I’m a rap fiend! Kanye, Jay-Z, OutKast, Wu-Tang, A Tribe Called Quest, Dipset, A$AP Rocky, Slum Village, Kendrick Lamar—they’re all gold. I love J Dilla. I’ve been listening to TNGHT, the Ed Banger crew, Jai Paul, and Rustie lately too.

How about your all-time favorite artist?

My all time favorite is Daft Punk. They’re the greatest. Kind of obsessed.

Have you ever seen them live?

I never had the chance to see them live! It kills me, but hopefully they’ll tour again with this new album soon. It’s going to be so good, I can’t wait. The little snippets they’ve released are incredible.

Similar to the “What would you do for a Klondike Bar” idea, how far would you go to meet them?

Oh man, it would be pretty dope just to meet them. I already have a tattoo of their logo—that shows some dedication right?

Outside of UO, what do you do in your spare time?

I’m pretty much always drawing, painting, or making something.

What’s something you’re working on at the moment?

Some gouache and acrylic paintings, a beat-tape with some animations, and I’m always on my Krink and Blackbook flow.

There’s been talk around the office of employees wanting to get your work tattooed on them. Has that happened yet?

No one has gotten a tattoo! That’d be dope though. People have mentioned it to me, but they end up just slackin’. It’d be fun to tattoo someone actually. I should start doing that.

You're somewhat known around the office for your amazing laugh. What do you hear the most from people about it? Did you ever get in trouble in school or somewhere you had to be quiet but couldn't help it?

Most people don’t think that it’s real at first. No one ever expects to hear a laugh like mine. People get genuinely concerned for me because it sounds like I’m dying. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten in trouble in school or anything for it. Everyone always embraced it. Some teachers would do classroom competitions to see who could make me laugh the most. The only thing with that is kids would get so into it, I would never get a chance to actually breathe.

Oh god, you’re going to accidentally die laughing. What’s something that always makes you laugh?

Anything that’s just stupid funny. And you can never purposely try to make me laugh or it just won’t work. You have to be witty too.

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

CatDog

How about a superhero? What power(s) would you choose?

I would just want to be Batman.
