Employee of the Month: Ashley Watson

Employee of the Month

Space 15 Twenty's senior
visual manager really likes Halloween and dressing up.

What are some of your favorite things about living in Los Angeles?
There's a Magic Castle! Although significantly disappointing, it exists and for that I am grateful. The weirdness of the city in general I guess. The Hollywood freaks are truly inspiring. I grew up stealing my brother's hair metal cassettes and gawking over DIO posters, so to see the old Hollywood rocker guys keeping the dream alive is really special to me. The weather is nothing to cry about either.

What's the coolest part of your job?
Working with different people and materials constantly, and being resourceful. One month we could be building a cross section of a barn, and the next month a mirror maze…who knows. My team is pretty hilarious too– they make challenges fun. Every day is a new challenge.

Have you ever met celebrities around town?
A bunch come shopping here. The scruffy guy from Mighty Boosh came in and that was really neat. I missed Rob Zombie by a few minutes and was super bummed about that, although that was probably fate trying to eliminate a potentially embarrassing moment from my life. Half Sack from Sons of Anarchy has been in twice. I followed him around for a bit. I guess I don't meet celebrities as much as lurk around them, ha!

What do you enjoy doing when you aren't at work?
Flea markets in L.A. are amazing and Long Beach is my favorite. After living in a dump in New York for so long it's nice to have a place that is clean and charming that I can finally make feel like mine, so decorating is fun. I'm also an avid bather and wine spritzer drinker.

If you had to choose a few items from your closet to wear forever, what would they be?
I have a gray XXXL Hugo Boss cardigan that I found thrifting in Long Island. It is probable that I will actually wear that forever. I just bought an excellent vintage opossum fur vest, and maybe my black t-shirts. That's all I can commit to for now.

What posters or pieces of art are hanging in your house?
I have been blessed with an insanely talented group of friends, so the majority of my artwork is from buddies of mine back East. My friend owns a gallery in Miami so I got some stuff from him. My first art purchase is a Jay Hines drawing, but it is in transit from Miami to here. I'm really proud of that one.

What about when you were a teenager?
When I was in high school, I had giant stuffed dolphins hanging from my ceiling. I think my sister won them for me at Sea World. I hung stars and other trinkets from the ceiling too. Didn't really have any posters though. My best friend Heidi had the best room ever! Her mom let us write all over the walls, so we would spend hours drawing and proclaiming our love for silly boys through teenage poetry. We made our own art I guess.

What's the best advice you've ever been given?
Don't talk with your mouth full.

Do you have any style muses?
Joan of Arc, Diane Keaton, my mom.

What's the last tattoo you got and what is your next one going to be?
I got a heart on my arm that says "MOM." The next one with either be a heart on the other arm that says "WOW" or Stevie Nicks lyrics. Both are pretty bad ideas, and I'm full of them.

What are you going to dress up as for Halloween?
This year I'm going to be a Soctopus, but I can't take credit for that one. The idea came from the mind of Arthur Velocette, who works at Urban Outfitters in Philadelphia. We're going to have an East Coast vs. West Coast sock-off. I'm pretty confident that I'll win.

What have you been for the past few Halloweens?
Heavy Metal Parking Lot, Santa Claus, earth worm, cardboard box cheeseburger.

What's your favorite horror movie?
Bram Stoker's Dracula. I love Gary Oldman as Dracula. Any movie starring Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder is pretty horrific.

Which monster is your favorite?
Dracula...he's a monster, right?

What are you most afraid of?
The Apocalypse.

Have you ever seen a ghost?
No, but most definitely believe in them.

What's your favorite trick-o-treat candy?
I love Kit-Kat and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Halloween is not the time to get cheap, so brand name only.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Scooby Doo?
Buffy. Not a huge cartoon fan, and I would always wonder why Shaggy and Scooby didn't just man up or change their profession.
