Mark Hunter (real name) is this weird Jewish guy from L.A. that started taking pictures of his friends at parties and fastidiously documenting them on his blog, thecobrasnake.com. Within a few months he was getting paid thousands of dollars to fly around the world and take pictures of other people's friends. Then a whole industry was born of other people taking pictures of other friends for other photo blogs. What the hell? This college dropout became a thousandaire and started a whole new economy just by going to parties. The legacy has just begun.
- UO: Why Urban? Why work with us?
- MH: Urban has been around from before I was born. They have always been unique and strive to work with the best of the best. It was great when they emailed me and asked if I would shoot the fall shoe books.
- What was the experience like? Did you have complete freedom?
- I met with the creative team in Philly and they told me they loved me for me. They wanted me to do what I do best... take creepy photos of feet. I love that we were on the same page.
- Did you both shoot and art direct this?
- I can't take credit for the whole package but I will cuz the whole book was shot and directed by me!
- Who are the models?
- MH: Homeless people... hipster girls and boys... they are really interchangeable, itŐs great. Actually I think it's easier to direct the homeless.
- What about the product? Did you have an influence on brands and stuff?
- When the project started I wanted to have a say on who gets in the "club". I was the bouncer at the catalog's door... not every pair of shoes got to walk the red carpet if you know what I mean. But it was great because I got to work with brands I respect like SUPRA ADIDAS and PUMA.
- What other projects do you have going on?
- I'm always doing crazy stuff; just keep checking thecobrasnake to see what I'm up to.
- What are your future plans for the Cobrasnake?
- The sky is the limit. I want to be constantly inspired and doing things I love.
