• UO Interviews: Denim Favorites

Kate Moss for Calvin Klein. Rosie the Riveter in a chambray button-up. Dolly Parton in a Canadian tuxedo. Jane Birkin in high-waisted flares. Is there anything more timeless, democratic, or effortless cool than women in denim? Lauren Hutton said, "Style is what you choose" — it goes without saying that the greatest reflection of personal style isn't what you wear, it's how you wear it. So in the spirit of exploring personal style, we asked four girls from Austin to open us their closets and talk to us about denim, jeans, and take us around to where they wear their pants (because you've gotta trust a Texas girl about what makes for good denim).

What's your everyday pair of jeans?
    Baggy and belted

What's your best memory while wearing them?
    Traveling anywhere.

Where's the strangest place they've ever been?
Not necessarily strange place but strange feeling: I took a recent trip to San Francisco and got to catch the @Large: Ai Weiwei exhibit at Alcatraz. One of the sound installations called 'Stay Tuned' in A Block allowed you to enter a cell solo and sit and listen to spoken words, music, and poetry. It was a pretty real moment in my boyfriend jeans.

What's your preferred cut of jeans?
    Loose!

    What about waist length?
    Low

    Light, medium, or dark?
    Open-minded.

    Do you wash your jeans?
    Definitely, and air dry.

Hang them up or fold them?
    Fold.

Can you tell us the story behind your amazing flared jeans?
They're from a shop in Dallas, and I bought them on a recent trip home. I think we'll be good friends for a long time: they're a little high waisted and do some major flare at the ankle...they literally flap in the wind, it's great.

And the white boyfriend jeans...did you embellish those yourself?
I got these Levi's from the men's department in a vintage store in Austin a couple of years ago. I love old brooches and pins, so I girly these rough jeans up with some pocket glitz.

What kind of jeans did you wear in high school?
    Volcom

What's the best-fitting pair of jeans you've ever owned?
I once got a pair of custom jeans made in Nashville that fit like a glove.

What jean trends need to go away?
I don't think anything needs to go away. It takes all kinds!

Who are your denim style icons or favorite moment in denim history?
Elvis on one of the promotional posters for the 1962 film, "Follow That Dream."

What are your UO Denim picks?
    Ryder Long Overall
Urban Renewal Vintage French Military Jacket
    BDG Jogger Jean

What's your everyday pair of jeans?
I wear Levi's 535 Soft Black Leggings just about every single day. I love them so much, I own two pair. I rarely wear dresses and skirts, so I live most of my life in these jeans. They fit me pretty perfectly, they've survived lots of bike riding, and they're as comfy as skinny jeans get.

What's your best memory while wearing them?
The first one that comes to mind happened not too long ago: I very skeptically went to a gathering on Super Bowl Sunday, and to my surprise it quickly became my favorite day in a really long time. We didn't really watch the game at all (which I was pleased about) and afterward we played the most entertaining game of Telephone-Pictionary. During every round, I laughed so hard I couldn't breathe. I can't remember the last time I felt like that. Tears of laughter are the best thing in the world.

Where's the strangest place they've ever been?
Probably while our tour van was searched by Bavarian police in Southern Germany. We had to stand out on the side of the road while they went through all our things for no reason!

What's your preferred cut of jeans?
    Definitely skinny.

    What about waist length?
Low-rise. I have pretty long legs for being only 5'2, but my torso is quite short! High-rise jeans really accentuate the difference, and I feel like they swallow me whole...I feel like I shrink down to just a head, neck, and legs!

    Light, medium, or dark wash?
I prefer dark washes, and I love black jeans the most.

    Do you wash your jeans?
I do, though I don't really like to. I hate the way a freshly-washed pair of jeans fits.

Hang them up or fold them?
    I fold them.

What kind of jeans did you wear in high school?
I think they were either slightly flared or boot cut blue jeans. I remember distinctly changing my taste in denim after moving away for college. Any kind of flare makes me feel like a kid now.

Do you have a denim piece that reminds you of a specific period in your life or moment in time?
I've actually kept an old pair of black BDG Mid Rise Cigarette Ankle jeans from UO for way too long...they're completely ripped right in the seat, probably from me jumping on and off stages on tour. I wore them to my show at the North By North East festival in Toronto and it was there that they ripped beyond all propriety. I've kept them just in case I can get them repaired in a lasting way, and every time I see them they serve as a physical evidence of all the touring I've done over the last few years.

What's the best-fitting pair of jeans you've ever owned?

Oh man, they were a pair of black 524 "Too Super Low" Levis. I kept those too, despite the gnarly rip in the them! I still miss those jeans.

What jean trends need to go away?
    Overalls!  I can't take it.

What are your UO Denim Picks?

What's your everyday pair of jeans?
These Wranglers that I wear tapered and rolled up have been in heavy rotation this season.

What's your best memory while wearing them?
A couple weeks ago, I met Cate Blanchett and her three boys while wearing them at Spartan, where I work on weekends. I helped her youngest son pick out a pocket knife, and he convinced her to buy it by telling her that he would widdle her a flute.

Where's the strangest place they've ever been?
To both a concrete and stone cutting factory, accessorized with a hard hat.

What's your preferred cut of jeans?
Old Levi's or Wranglers, rolled-up loose, altered skinny, or cut-off short.

    What about waist length?
Usually I do high-waisted, but feelin' the boyfriend cut lately.

    Light, medium, or dark wash?
    Dark, but worn-in.

    Do you wash your jeans?
    Very little.

Hang them up or fold them?
    Fold 'em.

Can you tell me the stories behind your Wrangler jacket?
I worked in vintage stores during and after college, and I collected some classic pieces while working there, including this perfectly beat-up men's Wrangler jacket. It was too good to pass up, even though it's a size 42. I will probably give it to someone that it actually fits someday, until then I wear it oversized.

What kind of jeans did you wear in high school?
I grew up in the Texas Hill Country, where the fashion was lacking but the thrift stores were abundant. When I couldn't find what I wanted at the mall, I thrifted or altered clothing. In high school I wore ill-fitting jeans and gave myself bad haircuts (both of which I still do occasionally).

Do you have a denim piece that reminds you of a specific period in your life or moment in time?
The pair of jeans I took with me five years ago on my solo Europe backpacking trip are still hanging around.

What's the best-fitting pair of jeans you've ever owned?
I have a pair of grey 90's super high-waisted cigarette jeans that fit like they're painted on and I feel like a boss when I wear them. There is a big logo at the waist with a red comet that says “Daily Jeans,” but I can't find anything about them on the Internet. If I could, I would definitely buy a few more pairs.

What jean trends need to go away?
It's been a long time since I've seen a denim skirt that I liked.

Who are your denim style icons or favorite moment in denim history?
Maison Martin Margiela + denim, and and who doesn't love Jane Birkin looking tres chic in a pair of jeans?

What are your UO denim picks?

What's your everyday pair of jeans?
Surface To Air Super Skinny V1

What's your best memory while wearing them?
I wore them the day I met Mos Def. And by "met" I meant I complimented his shoes, he complimented my necklace, I beamed, grinned, and froze in place.

Where's the strangest place they've ever been?
Vegas. I recently went for the second time and it was just as weird as the first. The whole city is an adult theme park.

What's your preferred cut of jeans?
    Skinny

    What about waist length?
Medium rise, fits my petite self like a high-rise

    Light, medium, or dark wash?
Raw or dark wash, though I've been slowly experimenting with a lighter pair.

    Do you wash your jeans?
Never. Unless I spill something on it, then it's hand-washed in cold water and air-dried.

Hang them up or fold them?
Both. I feel like I find things better when hung vs. tearing through piles of folded clothes.

What kind of jeans did you wear in high school?
Levi's, L.E.I., Tommy Hilfiger. I really wanted a pair of JNCO but my mom said 'no way,' thank goodness.

Do you have a denim piece that reminds you of a specific period in your life or moment in time?
A pair of Calvin Kleins from the '90s. I feel like my mom in them, but probably not as cool.

What's the best-fitting pair of jeans you've ever owned?
Cheap Monday had a pair of perfect fitting raw skinny denim when the brand first surfaced. I tried to track down the same pair a year later and was unsuccessful. Now I've developed a habit of buying two of favorites just in case. Better safe than sorry.

What jean trends need to go away?
All the ones with no back pockets need to go away. Should have never happen.

Who are your denim style icons or favorite moment in denim history? Any links or reference images would be great here!
Kate Moss for Calvin Klein, duh. I was obsessed and still am. Kate Moss forever.
