• Trend: Pastels

Who better to ask about the latest and greatest trends than our own employees?  Here Jean Candido, our assistant copywriter and contributor to HyLo Boutiques, talks about her favorite trend of the moment: pastels!

"Pastels seem to be catching my eye left and right—from the parking lot at the home office to the pages of my favorite glossies. There’s something about these soft, soothing tones in finger-licking shades of mint green, lavender and light coral that have me perpetually keeping a sweet, feminine array of items on my UO wishlist, which boasts everything from beauty products to shoes, shades and wallets.

The June 2012 issue of Vogue Beauty Japan showcases a sweet spread of pastels that immediately reminds me of Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film Marie Antoinette. Who could forget Kirsten Dunst’s overflowing bounty of beautiful, ornate gowns, and her toppling piles of pastries resembling Ladurée’s legendary macarons—those soft, sugary sandwiches that would make anyone’s mouth water.

Beauty is no exception to this look.  There seems to be a diverse array of light pink lipsticks and candy-coated palettes popping up all over the place. I’m a big fan of Lime Crime’s selection, especially Great Pink Planet, a perfect pastel pink that Urban carries along with a daring periwinkle purple, Dlilic.

Charlotte Free, one of the industry’s new model-muses, has recently been rocking some serious cotton candy hair, which is one of my favorite representations of this trend. I love the light pink locks juxtaposed with Charlotte’s edgy street style and punk rock attitude. Let’s be honest: the head-to-toe pastel look à la 3.1 Phillip Lim Spring 2012 is gorgeous, although perhaps not the easiest for everyone pull off. Pairing a bubble gum pink or spearmint green with black (which Lim incorporates as the collection progresses) is an easy way to keep the whole ensemble grounded and to add a bit of an edge. Think of it as the dark chocolate component of the whole equation. Yum.

Below are a few of my favorite pastel Urban products so you can go and get your cotton candy dreams on!"
