The UO Nice List: Beci Orpin
Designer Beci Orpin's holiday traditions have us seriously considering movie to the land down under and living in her mom's back yard.
I'm Beci Orpin. I'm a designer of sorts from Melbourne, Australia.
What do you love/loathe most about the holidays?
Here in Australia, Christmas is in summertime so for me it means the beach and weeks of summer holidays, which I love. My kids are of course super into Christmas too, so that makes the whole ordeal way more fun. And loathing: summertime is also the busiest for my partner Raph (he runs Taco Truck and Beatbox Kitchen) so generally we get to spend Christmas day with him and then he has to head off to a festival somewhere. That’s not fun.
What’s your gift-giving style? Personalized presents, or a Starbucks card for everyone?
Personalized. This year we are taking personalized to the next level and are hand-making gifts.
What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?
Raph took my youngest son Ari to one of my favorite stores and let him choose a dress to give me. That was pretty great on many levels.
What’s the worst gift you’ve ever received?
Mint chocolate. I despise it.
If you could ask for anything this year (and money is no object) what would you ask for?
The ability to stop time. And a studio in the forest in the shape of a mushroom.
What is your favorite holiday tradition that you share with friends or family?
After we have fulfilled all of our family duties on Christmas day, we drive down the coast to my mum’s beach house and invite lots of our friends over. Raph and I cook a big dinner, which we eat on a long table in the backyard by candle light. It's such a good vibe. There usually ends up being quite a few of us and everyone stays for a few days, so there are tents in the back yard and people sleeping in the loungeroom and everywhere they can fit. It’s super fun.
What’s your favorite holiday snack or food?
Peaches and watermelon.
Without looking it up, what are the ingredients in eggnog?
I have absolutely no idea. Egg nog is not so big down here.
Any idea how you will spend New Year’s Eve this year?
My friends have thrown a rooftop party the past few years which is pretty fun, so either there, or at home, drinking fancy champagne and watching DVDs.
If you could be any character from a holiday movie, who would you be and why?
I cant even think of any holiday movies. I think we are too busy eating prawns and going to the beach to watch TV at Christmas time.
If you could plant a New Year’s kiss on your dream crush, who would that be and why?
My husband Raph! Or Nas in the '90s.
