Recap: Mad Decent Block Party LA
Over the weekend, Diplo brought his record label's traveling summer concert tour, Mad Decent Block Party to Los Angeles Center Studios. On the packed lineup were Matt & Kim, RiFF RaFF, The Partysquad, Clockwork, Big Gigantic, and Major Lazer to name a few. Below, check out photographs from the event, some street style, plus all of the madness I saw go down under the crazy hot California sun. Each performance on Saturday was bigger than next one, making the crowd lose it over and over again! Oh, and did I mention that Dillon Francis played a surprise set and RiFF RaFF performed with a puppy? Yes, this block party had everything. —Maddie
After finding my way around the event and being welcomed by the beats of Sasha Go Hard and Samo Sound Boy, the first total set I got to catch was RiFF RaFF's. Guys, I was so excited to see RiFF, mainly because of all the hype he's gotten this year, and well, I mean, just look at him. He performed with his new puppy, Jody Husky, who I was freaking out about, because look how cute he is. Jody Husky was even wearing some bling. During RiFF's set, Lil Debbie came out to debut some new tracks as well.
Was totally into this DIY Major Lazer banner these girls made.
Amongst the music, there was a fair share of mega well dressed cuties. I also saw lots of coordinating outfits, my favorite being this couple inspired by their favorite fast foods.
After exploring the site for a bit and checking out street style, it was time for Matt & Kim! I was most excited for their set, because they put on one of the most energetic live shows I've ever seen. Kim Schifino is basically the most badass female drummer ever. At one point, they threw a bunch of balloons into the crowd to be blown up, it was so colorful. Such an awesome sight!
Jerry and Ruben of The Partysquad brought their Dutch beats to sunny LA and made everyone lose it!
Henry Steinway aka Clockwork really turned things up in the early evening with his refined dubstep. I don't think one person in that crowd was left standing still after hearing his insane bass combined with extreme groovy-ness.
Yes, I told you Dillon Francis made an appearance! Initially I saw him backstage, just thinking he was probably there to support his pal Diplo, but nope, he was there to make all the girls scream for him. He played a quick set to all his hometown fans, which was a nice segue into the last two sets of the night, Big Gigantic and Major Lazer!
Big Gigantic were the second to last set of the day, and personally, one of the most interesting! Their music is an insane mix of live saxophone and dubstep. Who knew that existed, but it does now, and Big Gigantic are making it cool.
Anticipation building for Major Lazer...
Ah yes, it was finally time for Major Lazer, whose performance comprised of lots of things being thrown into the crowd by Diplo, twerking by one of the many awesome dancers of the day, fog, Diplo standing on top of the DJ deck waving a giant flag, oh, and a giant hamster ball that the crowd got to hold up. Diplo, Jillionaire, and Walshy Fire played all the crowd's faves, like, you know, "Bubble Butt," and even had someone dressed up as the real Major Lazer come out during the set. It was mad cool, guys. A+ for showmanship!
It was nearly impossible to get a steady photograph of Diplo and Major Lazer's energetic dancer, because the amount of jumping happening during this set. Cannot stress enough how much dancing Major Lazer causes! So much fun.
Mad Decent Block Party LA was seriously a good one, I can't wait to see what label mates Diplo brings along for the ride next year. And I hope Major Lazer brings back this hamster bubble Diplo walked through the crowd in.
