Pop Montréal In-Store - SAT!

Pop Montréal In-Store - SAT! permalink

If you’re in Montréal tomorrow we’re having an in-store performance in conjunction with Pop Montréal at our 4301 St-Denis location and it’s going to blow doors. Random Recipe are two former UO gals; one raps and beatboxes and the other sings acapella and plays the guitar.  Joining them will be DJ Arcade (another former UO staffer) and Supreeme (that’s them above), a trio of ATL based hip-hop cosmonauts. The show starts at 2pm so fix up and look sharp. And thanks a bundle to MOOG AUDIO, who were kind enough to sponsor the event. (Photo credit: Liliana Hudgens.)

Everybody Shirts - TONITE!

Everybody Shirts - TONITE! permalink

We love art shows that have a spirit of fun so we were fired up to hear about Everybody Shirts, a mega-group show at the Compound Warehaus tonite (!), Oct 3. The t-shirt is the canvas, if you couldn’t figure that part out, and we liked what the Compound Krew had to say: “The show itself will be amazing. There’s some awesome pieces made by awesome people, there are beers, there are snacks, there are people to talk to, there are people to high five, and there are generally good times to be had.” You heard it....the show runs 6-10pm and the Compound itself is located at 319 N. 11th St. (below Vox Populi and Copy Gallery – Wood st. entrance). Get there.

Embassy parties are one of the best parts of living in DC, and we know from experience that The House of Sweden (2900 K St. NW) does it up like few others. This Friday, October 3 from 6:30-9:30 is the Nudie Jeans-sponsored “After Dark in Denim” party; the night features a performance by Swedes Division of Laura Lee and our very own Hej Hej DJs. 25 bucks in advance - tickets are online only - a small price to pay for what has to be the only embassy party EVER where wearing jeans is actually ENCOURAGED…

Shuella

Everyone loves to wear wellies but sometimes you want to wear your favorite shoes out despite the rain. Shuella have come up with the perfect alternative to the typical rain boots with their self-described shoe umbrellas. The clencher here is that you can throw these on over your favorite heels and still look really stylish with the appearance of wearing cool boots.

Why Would You Knit That?

Why Would You Knit That? permalink

What would possess someone to knit a power cord?  Or a life-size Ferrari?  Or a piece of sushi? Why Would You Knit That? showcases amusing, hideous, laughable, and outrageous feats of knitting along with the requisite snarky commentary. Lesson learned?  Those knitting types certainly have a tendency to go overboard. (Via Neatorama.)

The City Paper’s Crafty Bastards is as close to a DC institution as an event can be after just five years; the massive indie craft fair has gotten SO big that this year it even has its own Twitter feed. Exactitudes

Exactitudes permalink

We like to think of ourselves as individuals and one of the fundamental ways we distinguish ourselves from the pack is with how we dress. The Rotterdam-based duo, Ari Versluis and Ellie Uyttenbroek, stick a wrench in that idea with their ongoing project, Exactitudes.  For 14 years, the pair has photographed thousands of people all over the world painstakingly categorized them by their style of dress, and compiled their collection into a website and a book.  A fascinatingly thorough and somewhat deflating project that might makes you feel like just one of a million.

Tights don’t last forever.  We’re lucky if we can get a few wearings out of a pair before we snag them or they run. Smaggle Style figured a way to lengthen the lifespan of her hole-y, otherwise expired tights by cutting them up into pieces and combining them with studs to create a great-looking necklace.  She’s been kind enough to share a how-to on her blog so that we, too, can imbue our hose with a second life.

Street artist Slinkachu creates miniature scenes on London streets, hoping passersby will stumble upon his creations.  At normal size, these tableaus would be mundane depictions of everyday life (a guy retrieving money from an ATM machine, a car accident, or man mailing a letter), but shrunken to mere centimeters, these frozen moments become surprisingly thought-provoking.  Slinkachu’s recently published book, Little People in the City, collects the artist’s of his fleeting handiwork, scenes captured before the city has its way with them.
