Hotel Praktik Rambla

permalink

The slogan for the Praktik Rambla is 'Less is Luxe," and so it's a beautiful hotel you can actually afford to stay in, instead of one of those places where you have to pool your money to split a martini at the bar.

There aren't enough words to describe just how covetable this new Chanel Coco Cocoon luggage is, just WOW. I'd be all for pulling this around JFK waiting on my next flight to Paris. X - Jen

Kevin Cyr's camper bike isn't such a bad idea, really. In addition to a functioning sculptural piece, he also immortalized it in a series of drawings and paintings.

Mark Jenkins is known for his outdoor exhibitions where he transforms parking meters into lollipops and makes animals out of packing tape, all in the hope that the creepy results will require more than just a double-take.

Bad Ass Mother Fucker is a blog by Evan Roth that has a profane title and some amazing content. Roth posts picture from his travels, including this giant tiger bunny he saw in China. This alone would make the trip worth it.

Ohio Is A Piano

Andy Woodruff is a cartographer, and after maping out the counties of Ohio, he made a discovery: Ohio has 88 counties and a piano has 88 keys. Thus Ohio As A Piano was born, so map out a route and listen to the tune.

Wah Do Dem

permalink

Wah Do Dem was filmed after the writers, Ben Chace and Sam Fleischner, won two tickets for a cruise to Jamaica, and it stars newcomer reggae artist Sean Bones and Norah Jones (yes, the one your parents like). The (fictional) movie follows Bones, who was left heartbroken by Jones, as he attempts to find himself in Jamaica. It premiers at the LA Film Fest in June, but until then, check out Bones' band, which is also called Sean Bones.

Tweenbots

permalink

Contrary to popular belief, New Yorkers are some of the nicest folks around. Tweenbots are proof of this. Tiny robots developed by Kacie Kinzer, Tweenbots try to navigate from the northwest to southeast corner of Washington Square park, getting stuck on and under things along the way, which is where kindness comes in: Tweenbots need humans—strangers—to help them reach their destinations, and they almost always do. Hotel St. Cecilia

permalink

While having drinks at Hotel San Jose, I discovered a postcard for its sister property, the Hotel St. Cecilia, and immediately fell in love. Named for the patron saint of music and poetry, Hotel St. Cecilia embodies the bohemian, glamorous spirit of Austin with a distinct late-'70s vibe, like "Hunter S. Thompson for Sheriff" posters in the suites, turntables in every room, and a library full of vintage vinyl, poetry and film. It's easy to imagine Janis Joplin or Christine McVie holing up in a place like this, with a bottle of whiskey and a new man.

One of the many reasons Austin is awesome: Allen's Boots, on South Congress, might be the only cowboy boot store in the world staffed by hipsters. I'll be doing most of the blogging while we're down here, and as a former Midwesterner, I feel right at home—though I did resist buying a cowboy hat yesterday for fear that it might make me look like a cheeseball East Coast poseur. Our showcases start today at our store at 2406 Guadalupe St., so check back for updates. Yee-haw.—Kate
