From Portland 05/05/09Gossip permalinkGossip‘s much-hyped Rick Rubin-produced album isn’t available in the States until 6/23. And while many die-hards saw Rubin’s involvement as just another example of mainstream co-opting indie’s best acts, if the first single, “Heavy Cross,” is any indication, they’ve hit this one out of the park. Sweaty, beer-soaked dancing, anyone? |
From Portland 03/25/09Plazm permalinkPlazm is a working design collective with clients such as Nike and MTV, and it still finds time to produce an incredibly high-quality art and literature magazine. For those really interested, there’s a video on their website of every page they’ve ever published (28 issues over 15 years), as they are turned by the hand of an intern. Here’s hoping someone bought the intern lunch that day. |
From Portland 03/24/09Joanna Bean permalinkJoanna Bean‘s feather mobiles are beautiful and delicate, yet so simple you look at them and think “Why didn’t I do that?” But alas, you didn’t and Bean did, so just buy one. |
From Portland 02/24/09Alela Diane permalinkAlela Diane‘s melodic voice is the equivalent of a Xanax and a warm bath: a powerful chill-out. Catch her currently on tour with Portland’s current favorite sons, Blitzen Trapper. |

From Portland 12/04/08Wood Pushers permalinkFor Wood Pushers, a Monsieur T.-curated skateboard art show at Hecklewood, artists such as I Love Dust, Arbito, Ruben Sanchez and Tom Webb were asked to paint blank decks or create separate pieces related to skateboarding. Roll through for the opening on Friday, Dec 4, and afterwards, all of the art will be available on the Hecklewood website as long as the show is up. |

It’ll cost you (four-day wristbands are $50) but you won’t miss the money after checking out the lineup.

From Portland 07/11/08Tenth & Grant permalinkThe notebook debate is always quietly raging. There are obsessives of the mini and the large, the gridded and the lined, the spiral and the perfect bound. We’re not even going to try to end the debate, we just wanted to offer up some clean and mean mini options from Tenth & Grant. (Via VLU.) |
From Portland 06/18/08Chloé Richard permalinkWhether you’re an average Joe just hanging out or some dancefloor gods like the dudes from Justice (above), it seems like if you are out in Portland at night you’re probably gonna end up in front of Chloé Richard’s camera. |
From Portland 05/14/08Tyler Stout permalinkTwo things we like: Flight of the Conchords and Tyler Stout’s rainbow-brite artwork for the their latest CD. Oh yeah, Tyler actually lives in Brush Prairie, WA but that’s really close to Portland so give us a little wiggle room with our geography, ok?

From Portland 02/14/08Holly Stalder permalinkInspired by Marie Antoinette and the Edwardian period, designer Holly Stalder keeps busy with her one off clothing line and co-owning Seaplane, the amazing boutique she runs with fellow designer Kate Towers. As a design collective, they sell garments from all over the world and have sort of become a special spot in Portland to find unique clothing and if you’re lucky, one of Holly’s own pieces. |

From Portland 11/06/07ICE ROD permalinkIce Rod, or, um, “the booty census taker” as he calls himself, is sheer genius. There’s probably a Scribble Jam MC that he’ll remind you of but we’re catching shades of MC Serch, Del, and even Kool Keith in this guys flow. He’s at the Stand Up Comedy store this Sunday so act like you know. |

The book is a collection of some of the 5,000 submissions to Fletcher and Miranda July’s interactive website, Learning to Love You More, which presents a series of assignments to undertake. From Portland 09/12/07Office permalinkOffice products and art for the modern worker. That’s what you get at Office, a Portland design shop/gallery/event space hybrid. Because really, as long as you’re stuck at a desk all day you might as well be employing a paper clip that’s at the height of both form and function.
