• Brands We Love: Moon Juice

When we first saw the Moon Juice dusts, we were intrigued. Were they a face mask? Something to add to our baths? Turns out they're something even more unique: healthy drink potions that help stimulate mind, body, and spirit. Moon Juice was founded by Amanda Chantal Bacon, a health food extraordinaire, with a background in fine dining, journalism, and health. While the brand's two California-based brick and mortar stores focus on selling fresh juices, nut milks, and raw foods, Amanda's Moon Juice dusts are a way for everyone to get in on the craze. We spoke to Amanda about where the idea came from, her favorite recipes, and if Moon Juice will ever make its way to the East coast.

Hi Amanda! First things first: how do you come up with all the different recipes for the juices you blend?
All Moon Juice creations come from my dreams or my heart. There's an intuitive force that moves through Moon Juice that doesn't pass through the critical mind when it comes to potion making.

What’s the most popular juice at your shop called? Can you tell us what’s in it?
"Goodness Greens," the greenest juice of them all. It's filled with kale, dandelion, parsley, and spinach!

How were the Moon Juice Dust mixes developed?
The Moon Juice dusts are ancient empire formulas that have been resurrected and brought to modern times with the help of traditional Chinese herbalists.

Can you briefly explain the benefits of them for people who may not know what they do?
Sure! Each one has a little story, so I'll run through them all.

    Beauty Dust
This ancient empiric formula expands beauty through calming the nerves, increasing collagen and silica production, toning and firming tissue, and both hydrating and fortifying skin, hair, nails and cell membranes from the inside out. Ingredients: Pearl, Goji, Schizandra, Rehmannia, Lo Han Guo, Stevia.

Brain Dust: This adaptogenic potion lights up your brain and increases mental flow by feeding neurotransmitters and brain tissue. Neuron velocity and vision are fine tuned by toning the brain waves, in particular the alpha waves that connect to creativity. Ingredients: Rhodiola, Astragalus, Gingko, Lion's Mane, Shilajit, Maca, Lo Han Guo, Stevia.

Spirit Dust: This spirit medicine feeds harmony and extra sensory perception through pineal gland de-calcification and activation. These elements help sustain the physical body, uniting the mind and spirit to enhance an overall sense of confidence, awareness and appreciation. Ingredients: Reishi, Pearl, Cinnamon, Goji, Lo Han Guo, Stevia.

Heart Dust: Opens the heart, literally and metaphysically, dilating capillaries and promoting the heart’s permeability. Strengthens the heart’s ability to accept and release. Contains rosamirinic acid and glycine which produce love feelings in the brain that melt right into your heart. Ingredients: Longan, Reishi, Ligusticum, Salvia, Lo Han Guo, Stevia.

Body Dust: This power potion contains an impressive portfolio of bioactive minerals and protein. High concentrations of calcium, phosphorus, and L-argine are key for tissue, muscle, bone construction and maintenance. Imbibe for athletic activity, injury, stressful times, and cortisol reduction. Ingredients: Astragalus, Rhodiola, Eleuthero, Morinda, Lo Han Guo, Stevia.

Goodnight Dust: Good night nerves, good night brain, and good night muscles. This nightcap tranquilizes blood flow, promotes natural melatonin release and stabilizes REM. As you sleep deeply and soundly your pancreas and liver are gently led to a nocturnal detox. Ingredients: Polygala, Chamomile, Zizyphus Spinoza, Schizandra, Lo Han Guo, Stevia.

How do you recommend people drink them? Do you have a simple recipe to use one in?
The best way to go about Moon Dust is keeping it on hand and in sight. I carry one around in my bag and simply spoon it into warm and cold water at restaurants instead of tea, and I've also been spooning it into nut milks at home: warmed can make a very nice latte. I'll also start my day by preparing a large water bottle pre-mixed with my Moon Dust of choice for the day.

Where do you source your ingredients for these products?
All the ingredients are organic or wildcrafted, and because they are the highest quality and most potent, they are sourced from different places all over the globe.

What’s your favorite thing to make for an afternoon snack?
I love a Heart Dust latte. This I make with pumpkin seed milk, warmed, which I then blend with a double dose of Heart Dust.

We know you used to live in NYC. Do you feel like you’ll ever bring your store back east or is the focus on LA?
I'm working on bringing home the moon as we speak. Moon Juice is a universal force; there are no coastal boundaries!

We saw you recently did a GOOP feature with Gwyneth. How does it feel having your products recognized by someone as health-conscious as she is?
Super cool. I love her. I have a lot of respect for a woman who's using her platform to really speak to the world about an uplifting movement.
