Beauty: Kristin Gallegos

For the launch of our new beauty store, we've been working with make-up artist (and former About A Girl) Kristin Gallegos to create a series of DIY videos illustrating some of beauty's strongest trends. Here, Kristin tells us why her approach to make-up is less about looking flawless and more about having fun.

Why did you choose make-up as a creative outlet?
I chose make-up as my creative outlet because I have always been drawn to beauty. When I was a ballet dancer, I quickly learned the art of theatrical makeup, but was always drawn to fashion. My job allows me to express myself and to take inspiration from so many different things. I get to create something all my own. I enjoy doing everything from beautiful makeup to edgy and weird makeup that is not necessarily beautiful but is artistic. And I love transformation!

Bold colors are everywhere this summer. Any hints for using them correctly?
Using bold color on the face can be tricky. But when done right it can be both interesting and beautiful. There really aren't any set rules in make-up. But if you are using bold color, I would suggest to use it on one feature on the face, like just the eyes or just the lips. That way the attention is drawn just to that one feature. It makes a statement without being too much. And if you are using more than one color, then try to pick colors that compliment one another.

What are some of your favorite colors right now?
Some of my favorite colors right now are red and 'greige' (grey/beige) as I call it! I have been using red on the eyes a lot in my editorials! It's super fun if done right. It can be a wash of color on the eyelids, or a red lip is always beautiful. Greige is great on the eyes. It's still a neutral, so it goes with everything, but it's a little odd so it takes it to a different place.

What was in your coloring box as a kid?
As a kid I was obsessed with coloring! My favorite colors in my coloring box were the fluorescents! I loved Chartreuse and Hot Magenta. I also loved Midnight Blue, Burnt Sienna, Razmatazz, Blue Green, Periwinkle, and Salmon.
