From Los Angeles 05/15/08Alyssa Zukas permalinkWe were pretty overwhelmed when we perused Alyssa Zukas’ portfolio page. It’s not enough that she designs rad t-shirts, but she also produces copious amounts of fine art, design, housewares, jewelry (see above), poetry, photography, sculpture, sewing and textiles. Phew! (PS...you can check out the tees she designed for us here.)

From DC 05/15/08Sticky Rice permalinkThere’s been talk of Richmond’s fave sushi restaurant, Sticky Rice, opening up a DC location for the last two years. Well, nay-sayers, it’s finally happening - and on the H Street Corridor, no less. With late hours and nightly events, we totally plan on coming in for Godzirra Rolls before and after shows at neighboring Rock and Roll Hotel.

From New York 05/15/08Tokion’s Creativity Now Conference permalinkIt’s amazing that Tokion is already in it’s 5th year of holding their annual Creativity Now Conference, which has always sought to raise the bar from a cultural exchange perspective. Expect the same high quality group of speakers from the worlds of art, film, design, photography, fashion and music that you’ve become accustomed to. It all gets going this Saturday at noon at Cooper Union. You can find all the line-up and schedule related details here. |
From London 05/14/08M.I.A. Clothing permalinkWith bright neons on the rise for summer, you can bet that a clothing line from M.I.A. will be quite welcome from those of you looking to stand out among the crowd. There’s not a doubt in my mind that the leggings she plans on releasing will sell out immediately.

From Portland 05/14/08Tyler Stout permalinkTwo things we like: Flight of the Conchords and Tyler Stout’s rainbow-brite artwork for the their latest CD. Oh yeah, Tyler actually lives in Brush Prairie, WA but that’s really close to Portland so give us a little wiggle room with our geography, ok?

From Los Angeles 05/13/08Eames Stamps permalinkJust a reminder that this Summer you’re going to want to revert to snail mail if only to slap one of these gorgeous Eames stamps on the corner of your envelope. |
From New York 05/12/08Warwick Saint permalinkAmong the many images in photographer Warwick Saint’s portfolio, these shots of Anouck Lepère are most definitely my favorite. Quite notably, the giant pompadour-like coif is completely new levels Winehouse. |
From DC 05/09/08Kim & Sara permalinkDJs Kim & Sara are best known around these parts as the Pow-Wow girls; their sets include everything from The Undertones and Small Faces to Black Lips and the Raveonettes. Stop by our Georgetown location (3111 M St. NW) from 2-4 this Saturday to catch them (and a healthy dose of power-pop) in-store. |
From Chicago 05/09/08Structures of the Sun permalinkWe know you’re gonna have your dancing shoes on tomorrow nite but that shouldn’t stop you from dropping in on this solid group show before you hit the club. The opening runs from 6-9 pm and features work by Robin Cameron, Noah Butkus, Wayne Pate, Steven Harrington and more! |
From Boulder 05/08/08Land Locked and Rocked - Part 1 permalinkLand Locked and Rocked is a quadruple the fun, quadruple the pleasure live music event happening this Saturday, May 10 at 4 of our non-coastal stores. For all of you that need to drive more than a day just to catch a glimpse of the ocean...never fear, the music is here. Our Boulder location (934 Pearl St.) will be working it out with The Chain Gang Of 1974 (above), who take the stage at 7pm. Up in the Gem State at our Boise, ID store (8th and Front St.), they won’t be humming a few bars of “Here We Have Idaho”. Rather, come 6:30 they’ll be stroking chins to the hush-and-blast of Mayerforceone then communing with the spacerock stylings of The Universal. |
From Minneapolis 05/08/08Land Locked and Rocked - Part 2 permalinkThe power of quad city music continues to form like Voltron. Over in Minneapolis this Sat nite, our 3006 Hennepin Ave. South store plays host to the way-wiser-than-their-years Weaver At The Loom (above). Speed’s The Name opens and the whole shindig kicks off at 9pm. Capping off the 4 pack at our Salt Lake City, UT location (12 South 400 West St.) is the charming alt-country of Band Of Annuals. Doors at 7:30. Have a blast and let us know how it was! |
From Philadelphia 05/08/08
Print Liberation Book Trailer permalinkWitness Print Liberation’s totally wacko trailer for their book The Screen Printing Primer which will show you how to start screen printing today using the most basic elements—a screen, some emulsion in a bucket, artwork, a light source and a sink. It’s also worth noting, since he reps Philly, that Ricky Oyola skated to the same Metallica song in Eastern Exposure 3. |
From Elsewhere 05/08/08Virtual Shoe Museum permalinkHave you found a pair of amazing shoes you can’t take your eyes off and want to wear non-stop? Then checking out the Virtual Shoe Museum might be something you’d be super into. Daphne Bikker is my total favorite so far. She’s killing me with these leather sneakers. |
From DC 05/08/08Much-much permalinkMiami artist Jen Stark brings her meticulously Xacto-d paper sculptures, colorful line drawings, and eerily psychedelic “Papermation” videos to DC’s Civilian Art Projects for “Much-much,” a month-long show opening this Friday from 7-9. Get there early and be prepared to stay late - Civilian openings have a reputation for turning into killer dance parties.

From Australia 05/07/08WON Magazine permalinkIssue #2 of WON Magazine is out now. It’s a strikingly beautiful hodgepodge of words, art, design and photography that will hopefully find it’s way onto your coffee table or magazine rack. That is, if you can find it here in the States. |
From Los Angeles 05/07/08Evil Monito Magazine permalinkSpeaking of magazines...Evil Monito, an early player in the online culture magazine scene, is back after a 3 year hiatus...glad to see they blew the dust off. |
From Minneapolis 05/06/08Calpurnia Peach permalinkThe design duo of Calpurnia Peach have given new life to the one piece playsuit with their mix of bright colors and various screenprints. It reminds me of Spring ‘08 Miu Miu (which is really huge right now) and if you wear it just like it’s styled in the photo above you’ll look flawless. |

From New York 05/02/08It’s All Happening permalinkTracy isn’t here this week because she’s packing for a road trip - the NYLON Summer Music Tour. She’ll be hitting 36 cities with four amazing bands (The Virgins, She Wants Revenge, Be Your Own Pet, and Switches) and sending you weekly updates about all the craziness. We don’t think anyone’s gonna start singing Tiny Dancer on the tour bus, but hey, you never know. To join in the fun, hop over to the NYLON Summer Music Tour site before the tickets sell out, and stay tuned next week, when Tracy tells us how many Urban tees she can shove in a duffle bag - she’ll need at least twenty to get from Anaheim to San Diego… |
From Chicago 05/02/08CircaCeramics permalinkHere’s one way we can get our hands on a Vespa. Gocco and glaze loveliness by CircaCeramics. (Via poppytalk.)

From New York 05/02/08Sophomore permalinkChrissie Miller’s Sophomore is the latest amazing label that will land on the shelves of cult favorite shop, Opening Ceremony. Check out the incredible look book and keep your eyes open for the Spring line, I have a feeling the striped leggings will be a hit this summer. |
From San Francisco 05/02/08Maker Faire permalinkMaker Faire: because you can buy stuff, sure. But why not buy stuff that you can make more stuff with? It’s like twice the stuff for half the money. While you’re there, check out tons of exhibits and demos, plus bands and the world’s largest (free!) clothing swap.

From Australia 05/01/08Justin Lee Williams permalinkWe’re always gonna dig on rainbow lasers coming out of mouths but what we really like about Justin Lee Williams is that he lives and creates in a studio in the forest and he also has chickens. (Via the cool hunter.)

From Paris 05/01/08Eric Elms at Colette permalinkMr. “Never Not Working” himself, Eric Elms, has churned out more solid design/art work than we care to document and somehow managed to maintain a semi-low profile. Well, all that should change now that Colette has given him a well-earned solo show. Do You Think About Me As Much As I Think About You? opens May 5 and runs through May 31. This is a no-miss if you find yourself in Paris. |
